This spring, Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast invites girls and their families to come discover the world of water and leadership at a free Wayfinding Wave Princesses event, in celebration of the leadership portrayed by the Disney character Moana. Wayfinding, when referring to one of our favorite princesses, refers to the Polynesian tradition of navigating the ocean without modern tools like compasses or GPS. It involves using the stars, clouds, currents, birds, and one’s own intuition to determine course and destination. The film highlights the importance of observation, adaptation, and drawing on collective knowledge.
Hey, that sounds like good leadership advice — and a leadership path Girl Scouts have been teaching for years! Wayfinding is not just about navigation; it’s a way of understanding and interacting with the world, relying on observation, intuition, and adaptation. Moana’s character development shows her journey from a young girl to a skilled wayfinder and leader, learning to listen to the ocean and guide her people.
Today’s Girl Scouts are doing the same. They are learning to observe, be part of a team, brainstorm, make decisions, and help guide their own experiences. For example, in younger groups (Daisies and Brownies), this might involve adults guiding discussions and offering questions to help Girl Scouts reach decisions.
Even at a young age, Girl Scouts participate in leadership roles rather than just passively absorbing information. They work together, learn from each other, and develop their ability to collaborate effectively. This includes learning to appreciate diverse perspectives and working as a team to solve problems.
Research shows that all-girl environments like Girl Scouts can be beneficial for girls’ self-esteem and performance at home, school, and beyond. In all-girl spaces, girls are free to learn and thrive in an environment where they feel safe to speak freely, take healthy risks, take on challenges, and be themselves.
We invite all girls and their families to attend one of our Wayfinding Wave Princesses events — free patch and activity kit included! Have some fun, make new friends, and learn how girls build courage, confidence and character in Girl Scouting.
